My Story:

Some people know exactly what they want to be when they grow up; me I took the long route in realizing my real passions laid in computers. Although long, the journey to web development could not have broadened my skills and prepared me better for a successful profession in tech.

When I was little I loved animals, and thought the novelty of working with zebras and tigers was hands down the coolest thing I could ever do when I grew up. Fascinated with all creatures great and small, I learned to draw every animal I could, horses, birds, cats and dogs, I was constantly checking out "How to Draw" books from the school library and sitting with a stack of paper and a pencil struggling to make the perfect drawing on the first try. I walked to and from school, and often would catch lizards and snakes and bring them to class for show and tell.

Zoology seemed like the perfect track for me, however come high school biology class I discovered through the dissection of a frog although fascinating zoology was not my thing. After being invited to join a special team of students selected from each high school in my county to learn networking, my career rout quickly changed from animals to computers. I learned about Visual Page and built my first website, and learned quickly the world wide web was an amazing place. Unaware of the directions Adobe PageMaker would take me at the time, I managed to develop a considerable amount of skill with desktop publishing. I learned how to make and manipulate digital graphics, and integrate them into everything I did.

It was my ability to package an essay like a product that caught my counselor’s eye and encouraged me to go into business not computer science like I intended. So into business I went, and graduated in a rescission landing me a management job at a make-up counter. I didn’t know the difference between lipstick and eyeliner when I started, but as my boss said "it’s lipstick Breana, not rocket science". It didn’t take me long to not only figure out the difference but learn to enhance the beauty of a woman’s face through the application of makeup.

I traversed several industries in my adult career, each one adding a little bit more to me. I was challenged on many levels to come up solutions to problems I had never seen before and managed to find an answer many time on my own with little to no guidance. But all along, in the background I held on to my computer skills, building them and refining them. By the time I reached my eighth year at my law firm I was not only free lancing in my spare time, but building my firm a database prototype to organize all their deposition transcripts. With encouragement from my departments partners I went back to school for web development. After long days, weeks, months of an immersion course I finished and found that I truly loved coding.

What makes me special and unique is how much more I bring to the table then just your average computer science graduate. I understand how business works, how to balance client demands with achievable products, how to work with artists and deal with the public. Working in various office environments I am flexible among diverse personalities, reliable and energetic. I am not your typical techie, which is what makes me a great complement to a team.
